You can do a video interview with a very cheap mic. It just doesn’t look very cool. My video interview at coffee shop with ‘El Chipo’ mic: http://youtu.be/PBueCjRGpQY

I have a couple of lapel mics that I just can't get to work 1/4" jacks. Do they need to have their own pre-amp? Works with my powered zoom and my cheap wireless system but not with bare mics. I bought this Art Pre thinking that it was a pre-amp to boost the signal. The joys of being a novice.
The lapel mic I have is battery powered (AA battery). I think you'll find most lapel mics have some sort of battery power given how they are most often used (a walk-around mic), I install the battery in the receiver and mic units when it is used.
The 1/4 jacks you mentioned are in the rear of the ART, correct? That's the OUT source that is designed to feed audio to monitors (speakers). You will need a 1/4 to XLR adapter and plug the lapel mics into the front of the ART. Whether or not you'll need to use the preamp built into the ART will be decided by testing.
Lapel mics that require phantom power are probably out there. But they might require additional adapters as they may not have the full size XLR connector.
Below is a YouTube video I made that may help (some).

You did not say if you were wanting to use the lapel mic while stationary or a walk-around mic.
Thanks for the question.
