UPDATE-Indiana State Police Helicopter Helps Locate Rush County Man

Indiana State Police Helicopter Helps Locate Rush County Man.Rush County – Around 9:30 p.m. last evening troopers responded to 9575 South CR 500W. to assist the Rush County Sheriff’s Department and other agencies in a search for a missing Rush County man. Family members had last seen George Henson, age 83, around 11:30 a.m. Sunday morning.

Mr. Henson’s vehicle and cell phone were at his home at 9575 South CR 500W, so family members thought he was nearby.  Officers from the Rush County Sheriff’s Departments, Indiana State Police and volunteers from area fire department as well as Rush County Emergency Management began searching a nearby wooded area and surrounding fields.

The Indiana State Police Aviation Section was called and the helicopter was requested to assist in looking for Mr. Henson. The copter arrived around 11:15 p.m. and within 10 minutes had located the man, lying in the edge of a field along a wood line. The copter directed nearby officers to Henson, who had an injured shoulder, but was conscious and able to talk when officers reached him.

As it turns out Henson had fallen from a tree stand earlier in the day after climbing up to check it and was unable walk out for help. Henson was transported to Rush Memorial Hospital by Rush County EMS, then later by STAT Flight to St. Vincent’s Hospital in Indianapolis for treatment of a broken and dislocated shoulder, as well as broken ribs.

David Ruegsegger, of the Indiana State Police Aviation Section, advised they were able to locate Mr. Henson so quickly by using the FLIR, or “Forward Looking Infrared Radiometer” device. According to Ruegsegger, “The FLIR detects heat on the ground, and is able to show anything that is warmer than its surroundings, including animals and humans.”  Indiana State Police Sergeant Dave Poynter, who assisted in the search for Mr. Henson said “With the cold temperatures we had last night, usage of the ISP copter and FLIR quite possibly helped save Mr. Henson’s life.”

The Rush County Sheriff’s Department and Indiana State Police were assisted in the search by the Anderson, Manilla, Waldron, Posey Twp. and Rushville Township Fire Departments as well as Rush County EMA.
