Consumer Clarity and Safety for Today’s Advanced Driving Systems.Driver distraction causes more than 3,400 deaths a year in the U.S., according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and requires urgent action. Although cell phones capture much of the attention, Consumer Reports (CR) research finds in-car infotainment systems and a variety of lower-tech driver activity, such as adjusting a radio or temperature control, talking to a passenger, or taking eyes off the road for any reason, contribute to the problem.
The automotive and tech industries have deployed technology that CR’s engineers and testers agree have tremendous potential to address the distracted driving issues. In fact, CR awards points to the Overall Score for every vehicle it tests that offers these enhanced safety features as standard equipment. However, consumers do not fully accept and understand them, underscoring the need for consistency and safety in the marketplace.
