Pendleton Trooper Receives Life
Saving Award
Pendleton
- On today’s date, at ceremonies
conducted at the Indianapolis State
Police Post, Master Trooper Fred
Shock was presented a life saving
award by State Police Superintendent
Dr. Paul Whitesell, Ph.D.
The citation read that on August 5,
2007, Master Trooper Fred Shock,
Pendleton Post, was off duty when he
responded to a vehicle crash close
to his home on the Madison-Henry
County line. The male driver was
west bound on State Road 38 when he
struck a concrete embankment, after
which his car flipped and caught
fire. Master Trooper Shock, with
assistance from two neighbors, a
Henry County Sheriff’s deputy, and a
good Samaritan motorist were able to
work together to free the victim’s
pinned feet. As the victim was freed
from his car he became engulfed in
flames and several neighbors doused
him with water from a hose.
Master Trooper Shock’s wife, Marsha,
a registered nurse, provided first
aid until additional medical
assistance arrived. Unfortunately,
the victim’s injuries were so severe
he died a few weeks after the crash.
Regardless, the selfless acts of
Master Trooper Shock and others that
came to the aid of the victim
afforded him a chance at survival
that would not have occurred without
their combine intervention.
Master Trooper Shock is a 27 year
veteran of the Indiana State Police
and assigned patrol duties in
Hancock County. At the time of this
crash Master Trooper Shock had just
returned from Iraq where he served
for over a year. He is also a Major
in the United States Army Reserves
out of Anderson.
