Intermittent Lane Restriction on US 40 for Precast Pavement Panel Installation

WAYNE CO., Ind. – E & B Paving, a sub-contractor to Gradex, will be installing precast pavement panels on U.S. 40 between Third and 11th streets beginning on or after April 24, weather permitting. This first phase of panel installation will conclude on or after April 28.

Trucks will use U.S. 40 eastbound to deliver and install the panels. The panel delivery and installation will cause an intermittent restriction on the only open lane on U.S. 40 eastbound that is anticipated to take 30 to 40 minutes with potential longer delays. INDOT encourages drivers to use an alternate route to avoid delays.

The panel delivery and installation will happen in multiple phases on U.S. 40 eastbound over the summer. Notifications of the other phases will be released once a schedule has been determined.

Precast Pavement Innovation

U.S. 40 between Third and 11th streets will be rebuilt using precast concrete panels.  This construction method is being used in several other states, and this project will be the first to use precast concrete panel pavement in Indiana.

By using precast panels, INDOT intends to reduce the pavement depth and potential conflicts with existing underground utilities. These panels are removable and replaceable, so any future maintenance required on underground utilities should not damage the pavement. In addition, using precast panels will reduce the time needed for construction, minimize future roadway maintenance needs and extend the pavement life expectancy.
